A Day at the Races (that ends with Karl on the podium again)

It was a day at the races again - Karl took the follow-up ski course. This is really his sport (and a very Munich thing to do, to take two week-long skiing classes with your kindergarten in one season).

There were test runs and training sessions to prepare. Few breaks to play.

And then it was ON! Bigger group. More competition.

But he got a medal again. Bronze this time (they somehow all look the same, but they do make a distinction between the three "rostrum medals" and the "lesser wins"). Made me beam with fatherly pride. And him with winner's glee.

I had gotten some good runs in during the training sessions. But now it was just Karl and me and the mountains (that massif in the back by the way is called "the wild emperor" and is indeed quite wild). We put on our game face...

...for not that long, since it was too much fun to go up the mountain again while most other kids had to hit the highway.

Alright, this last shot is a bit over stylized. But he is an impressive skier already. I had expected to kinda babysit a beginner, but he took an adult slope with gusto. It definitely was like going skiing not ambling down the baby hill. Fearless! With impressive speed and good jumps over the bumps. Gotta admit - that was a big dad moment probably comparable to junior's first goal, tie-break or bulls eye, depending on your cultural background.

A Whiff of Spring

The unseasonably warm winter is coming to an unseasonably early end (or more like, winter never started, but the sunny skies are turning from crips to mellow). Time to check on the garden! Karl was all ready to go earn another Euro (our pay scale is loosely based on the hourly rates of 90s Nike).

Henri was happy to have the great indoors all to himself and explored his knack for engineering.

Karl piled up some serious debris from the latest storms. At last Henri got curious.

And to his great joy he discovered that the bulbs he planted last fall did indeed have some sprouts peeking out.

So he immediately got into his green thumb mode and watered away. Blossoming photos hopefully following soon...

Hit It!

Henri and Karl are learning some real skills here from a local sculptor who kindly opened his doors for us when he noticed us staring at a giant metal scorpio on top of his roof.

Fasching (Carnival)

Quiz question - what motto did the carnival party at the St Emmeram kindergarten have this year?

So they marched on those brave space troopers to join the ring-around-the-rosie (to a full blasting "Gangnam Style", so it was definitely lively).

Fred did some Bob Fosse-worthy costume design that instilled some serious outta space pride in the boys and serious envy in other mothers and fathers (wishing they hadn't settled for the supermarket princess gown).

Saturday it was off to the barbershop for Karl to prepare for that trip to Omi's and Opa's (see post below).

Henri amused himself drawing a big boat on the ocean. He giggled all the way through his work. He wouldn't wanna tell me, but I think there is a really funny story about this boat.

Miss them!
